Small World (c)

    Rating: 9Reviewed By: Captainlunchbox03/19/2013
Summary ReviewThis is my new favorite "light" board game. It does just about everything right in this regard- It's quick to set up, easily taught, has a great balance of theme and mechanics, and is just generally a whole not of fun to get everyone together to play.
Detailed ReviewI honestly cannot tell you why I picked this game up. It's not that I wasn't interested and then, bam, it was on the counter and I was handing over money for it- I just don't remember. Usually when I purchase a game, I tend to build up a fair amount of hype for the experience. This way, when I go in to buy it, I'm just educated enough to get the jist of it so when I get home I can unbox, set up, and begin a mock game of it. This is not the case with Small World.

Don't get me wrong here, I did demo it at Guild of Blades. Ryan was even kind enough to fill me in on the overview of the game and offer a few pointers. He handed me a flyer for the upcoming board game night where the game was being featured. Unfortunately, I had to work, so I didn't make it out- but something about Small World got engrained in my memory. Something stuck. Within a week, I was handing over cash and walking out with a new copy of Small World.

Setting up Small World is a simple task, free of any ambiguity or frustration. Everything is laid out in a relatively thin, easy to read manual provided by the smart folks working over at Days of Wonder (I know it's a crime, but I still have no played Ticket To Ride. I'm sorry, everyone.) After punching out all the tokens (there are many, this will take quite some time, but that's the worst part of it.) you are presented with nice trays for storage solutions that not many board games come with.

A board is chosen based on player count. Various tokens are applied to their icon-designated spaces, banners and badges are shuffled and laid out, and you're ready to begin. The banners and badges are a great random element of the game that makes for high replayability. You can table this game time and again and you'll never play it the same way twice. Each player takes turns conquering, redeploying, scoring, putting races in decline, and buying new ones. It has a turn tracker that helps cap game time, but length always feels just right.

If you want a nice, light, Risk-esque, territory control game- this is the one.
