Runebound: Second Edition

    Rating: 8Reviewed By: Ben Rubinstein06/25/2012
Summary ReviewRunebound is a fun thematic adventure game best with 2-3 players. Each player selects a champion and moves him/her around the board racing to the end-game. You have a bit of control and strategy in how you advance your character through a combination of items and level increases. A fun, light and immersive (for the first couple plays) game, played in about 2-3 hours with 2-3 players.
Detailed ReviewRunebound is a highly thematic adventure game that states it's playable with 2-6 players. Everyone selects one champion to explore the map, which means either moving to adventure tokens or cities. In cities, you can shop for equipment or companions, and on the adventure tokens you start combat, or some sort of event happens.

The game is pretty well written, and while it's a bit campy I feel the flavor works well. The game tells a story, and hearing of the same villains several times over builds the environment so that you almost feel like you're playing a D&D type RPG. The only problem with that after a few times it loses its flavor and becomes a bit repetitive. The flavor text was exciting for me the first couple times through, but it's a bit hard to get into reading the same flavor text when it's no longer a new narrative.

The game is easy to learn and it flows pretty well from the beginning to the mid game then the end game. I love how you have direct control over what areas of your champion improves after he levels up.

Overall, I think the game is a fun experience for 2-3 players. I tried it with four and it really drags out a bit worth its welcome unless everyone is super on-task. I can't even imagine how long it would take with 5 or 6 players--at least 4 hours easily. The game doesn't offer much in the way of player interaction--it's more of a race to the end game--but if that's your expectation I don't see that as too much of a problem. Most of the strategy comes in the form of advancing your character through level-ups and items, but I don't think that's a problem. One other area I loved was the movement, which is much more interesting and less frustrating than Talisman, a similar game.
