Caylus Board Game

    Rating: 10Reviewed By: Patrick S.02/08/2013
Summary ReviewCaylus is one of the best worker placement and resource mangement games ever. The Board changes from game to game enough to add variety but not so much that you need to re-learn it every time you play.
    Detailed ReviewCaylus
Ystari games/Rio Grande publishing 2-5 players

Caylus is a worker placement/resource management game. You take turns deploying your workforce onto different locations on the board that allow you to perform different actions. The goal is to earn VP's while building a castle in dark ages France.

The game is played over a varying amount of rounds, the number of which can be manipulated by players to either speed up or slow down the inevitable end of the game. The actions occur in both a predetermined order then into a varying, from game to game, order. There is a road where buildings are built along and the processing of the various actions follows the road away from the castle. Players must manage money, workers and 4 types of resources. You construct buildings that allow more, and more efficient, actions to be taken. Players must pay to place workers and anytime another player places a worker in your building you earn a VP. There are ways to affect the other players: you can stop placing workers early in the round to drive up the cost of other players placing their workers, you can also cause certain action spaces to not trigger and cause any player who deployed a worker there to lose the action they already paid for. The first player position can be taken by anyone for a cost and does not pass from player to player each turn.

The board has several fixed buildings and the rest are purchased and laid out onto the road which determines the order that the actions take place in. A clever two piece mechanism is used to determine which actions are available each turn, and players can spend their Deniers to alter the results and potentially screw over other players. There are also several types of bonuses that can be earned and various strategies that can be played. There are also penalties for not contributing to the castle construction.

The components are top quality as to be expected from a Rio Grande published game. The artwork is nice, usual euro-game art, and the iconography is simple but very direct and understandable. The color rulebook is easy to understand and provides examples. The gameplay is easy to understand but hard to master and has a high replay value. Having a built in timer mechanism helps ensure that the game doesn’t go on to long while also being variable so adjusting to the situation at hand is as important as long term planning.
