    The Great Dalmuti Card Game

    Rating: 10Reviewed By: Kevin01/31/2013
Summary Review10/10 for being an excellent pick up game with no design flaws and high fun/time invested ratio. The game seats 4-8 players and is a good game to play before or after longer and more serious games. Light complexity, a lot of fun, more fun if you use optional rules involving silly hats. Highly recommended for all gamers.
Detailed ReviewThe Great Dalmuti is a variant on a climbing and shedding card game you have probably already played, and is a low complexity staple of even a basic and well rounded game collection. It is highly portable and easy to teach, with enough tactical complexity and randomness to keep advanced players interested but not unstoppable. Life isn't fair, and neither is this game, but unlike real life, that unfairness enhances the fun for all involved.

    Components:
The deck is 80 cards, and will survive a fair amount of play and shuffling, but is not spill resistant, with attractive but not outstanding art. There is a short manual with a modestly interesting history of the game and a particularly silly scoring system that should be ignored.

    Play:
The deck contains 13 different ranks of cards ranked 1-12 with two jokers ranked 13. The lower the rank, the better the card, and there is only one 1, two 2s, and so on. The entire deck is dealt out to all the players (minimum 4, max 8), and the two highest ranked players exact taxes from the lowest ranked players in the form of their best 2 or 1 cards, depending on rank, in exchange for whatever cards the high ranked players wish to give.

Starting with the highest ranked player, a player leads by placing any number of cards from their hand of the same rank. The next player may either play the same number of cards, but of a lower rank (all must be the same card) or pass. Play continues around the table until all have passed, the played cards are discarded and the last player to play leads a new round. First player to play of their cards begins the next hand as the highest ranked player, the second player out the next, and so on. There are optional scoring rules, but they should be ignored. Hands continue until players are tired of playing.

The game really shines however, if you use the optional social rules, where the highest ranked players also get to lord over the lower ranked players (all in good fun). The highest ranked players get the best chairs, wear impressive hats, get the first pick of snacks, and never have to run errands. Combined with taxation for-fun class rivalries spring up naturally and make the game very entertaining.

    Takeaway:
This is a game that every gamer should own. It is a low complexity, high fun card game that can seat up to 8 players comfortably and entertain them all, even when they are losing. I was once able to entertain a large group of middle aged Chinese immigrants many of whom have probably never even played monopoly in their life. It will get less and less use with a small group of players, but is very useful to have on hand to entertain larger groups. Highly recommended for all gamers.
