    BattleLore Board Game - Used

    Rating: 8Reviewed By: Captainlunchbox09/25/2013
Summary ReviewIf you found Memoir '44 to be just a bit too simplistic, Battlelore may be more your speed. Picture a game of Memoir, but with goblins, dwarves, wizards, rogues, etc. and you have Battlelore. Now mix in the ability to create your own War Council. Sound good? Read on.
Detailed ReviewBattlelore is a light war game from famed designer Richard Borg. His credits include the entire Commands & Colors game system- Memoir '44, C&C Napoleonics, Ancients, etc. Basically any game where you move around on a board, possibly in hexes, and chucking dice, while hoping to role a color relevant to the unit you're attacking- you can thank Mr. Borg.

The game works like this: You pick a scenario from the respective book. You agree on a side to play. Each scenario has its own rules, but the basic game flow after you deploy your troops is very simple: Play a command card, pick the units of that flank, class, etc. Move them. Roll your attacks, collect your kill trophies (Victory points) if any, draw a new tactics card. Very, very approachable, easy to teach, and fun.

This game's rule book (not the scenario book) is hands-down the best rule book ever produced by a board game company. It reads like a strategy guide. There are over 80 pages total, but most of the page is filled with gorgeous, lush diagrams clearly depicting the action in the paragraph preceding it. And the way it eases you into the game? Brilliant.

The components, wow. I can't tell you how gorgeous the over 100 miniatures you're going to be getting are. They are worth painting, they're so well-sculpted. It also comes with various decks of cards, terrain hexes that go over the hexes already on the board for hills, forests, etc. You also have standing slots for your cards, and gorgeous wooden dice. Par for the course are various tokens for statuses and other surprises I won't give away here.

Once you get into creating your own War Council and lore decks, the game introduces a magic aspect to the combat with separate cards that add replay value and further unpredictability to an already tense game. The game is balanced by players reversing sides, setting up again, and totaling overall victory points.

Are there any negatives? Yes. Set up time is a bit cruel. You have to slot flags in to the unit stands and set each type of unit accordingly. It can be time consuming and a bit boring- following the game's guidelines can reduce that time, but it's still a chore.

Overall Battlelore is a solid game, and I was lucky enough to find a copy, seeing as it is now out of print. Fantasy Flight will be doing a reprint, since they have the license, but it won't be the same. If you can find Battlelore, you owe it to yourself to take part in all of the excitement in this little box. As a bonus, it is totally expandable. Good luck.
