    Mountain of Inferno Card Game

    Rating: 9Reviewed By: Patrick S.09/28/2012
Summary ReviewAnother gret game from Z-man...lots of strategy in a small box. Great value, small box and high quality card stock. Combines hand management and movement on a "board" built from cards played from hand. Cool funky art too.
Detailed ReviewMountain of Inferno Z-Man Games

    2-4 Players 30 minutes

Mountain of Inferno is a card game with a board game element. Players lay cards and create a network of "disciples" and move their token on the "card-board" and try to end up at the intersection of a column of 4 different "disciples" and a row of four different "disciples". The "disciples" are actually characters from an ancient chinese novel. The "disciples" come in 4 different characters, 9 of each, with a value on each. 4x1 point, 3x2 points, 1x3points and 1x-3 points. Scoring is done when a player sets their token at the intersection of 4 different "disciples" ina row and 4 different "disciples" in a column. Each player adds the value of the different "disciples" in the 4 cards in a row and in a column, with the player who ended the round counting the axis card twice. if a player has 2 of the same "disciple" in their row/column of 4 they only count 1 of them in their scoring.
There are 2 rows of random "disciple" cards to start, each containing as many cards as players. Players recieve 3 cards to start and can play one "disciple" per turn, placed anywhere adjacent to the natural sides of any card in play. There are also some special character cards that provide some special moves: Removing a "disciple" card, relocating a "disciple" card with a token on it, allowing extra moves for a token. There are also ways to negate a special card played by another player. A player can then move their token 1 space in an attempt to get to the intersection. Only one player token can be on any "disciple" card. The number of rounds scales with the number of players.

The card stock is excellent, the usual Z-man small box stuff. The artwork is pretty wild and its very easy to tell the different cards apart. The instructions are clear, my review is longer than the rules, and it includes diagrams and examples. The box is the perfect size and it includes a scoring track.

This is another great game from Z-Man. We were playing after 1 read through of the rules. We played 2 2-player games in an hour and the strategies starting evolving very fast. For the cost it has a lot of gaming value. Its a simple rule set with a lot of thinking and planning involved while not being too complex or offering too many options and confusing players. This would be a great game to get people into our hobby gaming world.
