    Detailed ReviewLifeboat Gorrilla Games

    4-6 players 1 hour

Lifeboat is a card game of survival and treasure collecting. The Premise is that the passengers are all survivors on a life boat circa 1920's. passengers score points for collecting jewels, cash, and artwork. They also score points for survivng and making sure that the other passengers that they "love" or "hate" survive or die. Each passenger secretly recieves a love and a hate card. Each passenger has a survival rating and a size rating. The survival rating indicates how many points are earned for survival or demise. The size is used in Fights
The passengers are arranged in a line, the formation is predetermined by the rules. At the front of the boat is the "Provisions" deck and at the rear is the "Navigation" deck. The passenger at the front draws one card for each passenger, chooses one then passes the rest to the passenger 2nd from the front. This continues till each passenger has recieved a Provision. Provisions include weapons, treasures, water and navigation equipment. After the Provisions phase in the Action phase. Passengers may attempt to change places with another passenger or steal a Provision from another passenger. They can also Row, looking at the top two cards from the Navigation deck and placing one of their choice into the Navigation STACK. If the victim resists there is a Fight. Other passengers can opt to join in the fight on either side. Once everyone who wants to join in has, total up the size value and any weapons. The side with the higher total wins and any changing of places /thefts occur or don't. After the Action phase is the Navigation Phase. The passenger in the back of the boat looks at the Navigation STACK and chooses one to take effect. The Navigation card Lists a few factors. It will tell you who specifically is thrown overboard in the waves, who specifically gets thirsty from the heat, if the passengers who rowed or fought get thirsty or go overboard and if any Birds are sighted. After 4 birds are sighted the game ends. Anyone who lost a fight or went overboard or suffered from thirst takes a wound chip. Water Provisions can be used to dodge some negative effects.

The Navigation cards are balanced to off set size advantage. The bigger passengers are more likely to be tossed overboard, but they also get their way cause they can beat up other people easier. Some of the smaller passengers score extra points for certain types of treasure. At the end of the game passengers total up their treasure and score their survival points for themselves and their "love" and "hate" passengers survival values. passengers can love and/or hate themselves and/or the same passenger. The rules allow for that and give bonuses for that too.
The card stock is very high quality and super glossy. The artwork is good and is appropriate for the time period. There are also seagull meeples! The rule sheet is slightly unclear but the websites FAQ clears em up. We were able to work through any issues using common sense.

This is a really really fun game. There is direct conflict and sneaky backstabbing trickery. The rules encourage you to make deals and not honor them! It's not enough to be a bully cause you never know who really has your interests in mind. Sitting in the front gives you best choice of Provisions but the passsenger in the back determines who gets the old heave ho. And at the end of the game its all about points, not just beating people up. The more passengers the better, it decreases the chances of lovehating the same passenger.
