Description The Final Offensive
In September 1918, John "Blackjack" Pershing's US First Army launched a massive offensive in the tangled Argonne Forest astride the Meuse River. Despite careful preparations and a heavy preliminary bombardment, progress was disappointingly slow; the Germans had become aware of the impending attack and had rushed reinforements to bolster their already formidable defenses. Pershing's attack ground to a halt in just four days. After some reorganization and the appointment of a new commander, Gen. Hunter Liggett, the Americans tried again. This time, with fresh divisions at the forefront supported by over 300 tanks and 500 aircraft, the offensive began to gain ground. The Argonne would test the mettle of both sides with equal ferocity.
Meuse-Argonne utilizes the popular Fire & Movement system, modified to model World War I operations. It features more detailed bombardment rules and less flexibility in support fire to simulate the realities of trench warfare. Trenches and frontal assaults are the primary tactic in the game, resulting in high rates of attrition. Players must rely on careful massing of men and support fire to break into enemy positions. Most units have the capacity to absorb some losses and keep fighting, but only at substantially reduced strength. Winning the battle is a matter of maneuver, firepower, and target prioritization.
The main German line is immensely strong, but thin and susceptible to a sweeping flank attack. The German player must carefully judge the right time to pull back to avoid growing American pressure. The American player has much greater resources, but time is as much the enemy as the Germans. The initial German line must be cracked quickly if the Americans will have any chance to reach the key rail junction of Sedan. However, too aggressive an attack will leave the Americans too weak to break subsequent German lines. Both players must carefully balance casualties against ground gained or lost, with an eye always on the clock.
